Overview

Since 1881 the American Association of University Women has been the nation’s leading voice promoting education and equity for women and girls. Through landmark research, it has changed the conversations about girls in schools. Its public policy advocacy has worked to inform and mobilize members on many issues affecting the lives of women and girls. AAUW North Carolina is the vehicle that brings the work of the Association home to our communities, and you are invited to join us.

In principle and in practice, AAUW values and seeks a diverse membership. There shall be no barriers to full participation in this organization on the basis of gender, race, creed, age, sexual orientation, national origin, disability, or class.

Categories of membership

AAUW NC Membership

Community-based branch member
If you hold an associate or equivalent, baccalaureate or higher degree and wish to connect with other AAUW members in your community, please contact one of the branches about how to join. All branch members in NC are also members of AAUW and AAUW NC.
Tar Heel branch member
If you’re a graduate who doesn’t live near one of our 20 community branches, or if a community-based branch doesn’t fit your life, you’re invited to join the Tar Heel branch, a virtual branch which serves the entire state. Formed in the fall of 2008, this branch provides the benefits of AAUW and AAUW NC membership along with access to the branch roster so that groups too small to form a branch can still use AAUW’s name in their communities for special projects or events. Join now.

AAUW membership through the national organization
If you have already joined AAUW through the national organization, you will be contacted a couple of times a year by AAUW NC and you are free to subscribe to our publications that are open to nonmembers. But to join AAUW NC and get full benefits (for $11/year plus branch dues in addition to your national dues), please consider joining one of our branches (see above).

National member
Graduates are welcome to join the Association to start receiving the benefits of the “national” organization. Contact us if you are already a national member and want to find out how to join one of the branches.
College/University partners
Degree granting institutions may join the Association as college/university partners and appoint two members of their staff or faculty as representatives who will receive all the benefits of AAUW national members. These representatives may also join branches by paying branch dues. [State dues are waived and sometimes branch dues are waived as well.] Others on campus are welcome to join as branch members or national members. Check the list of current C/U member institutions to see if yours is listed, and consider encouraging your institution to join if it hasn’t already.

Student Affiliates

Students enrolled in a bachelor’s or associate’s degree program may join either the national organization or affiliate with a branch. They may also join or start a student organization on their campus. Contact one of the people listed on the branch information page if you want to connect to a local community. AAUW NC and its Tar Heel Branch do not charge fees to student affiliates, and for those attending institutions that are college/university partners, there is a new, free, e-student affiliate status. For information about the support AAUW NC can offer student affiliates, please contact info@aauwnc.org.
